The Basics of Candidiasis


Candidiasis is the most common type of yeast infection which is caused by the species of candida. The most common form of candida that causes candidiasis is Candida albicans. This fungal infection is also commonly known as yeast infection. Candidiasis infection ranges from superficial skin infections to even potentially life threatening diseases. It enters the body through skin cuts and penetrates the inner skin surface thereby spreading to other areas.

This yeast is present in the human body but their growth is limited due to other bacteria present in the same location. They generally grow in moist areas of the body such as underarms.

Candidiasis is a symptomatic disease. The signs and symptoms varies depending on the type and location of candidiasis. Some of the common symptoms of this infection are gastrointestinal ulcers, redness, itching, discomfort, oral a yeast infection, vaginal irritation, candidemia, burning, irritation, soreness, white cottage cheese like discharge from vagina, redness and patchy sores on the penis, and skin blisters in the crotch region and breast region.

Candidiasis infection is diagnosed with the help of microscopic examination or culturing by swabing the affected area.

This yeast infection is generally treated with the administration connected with antifungal medications. Group of drugs called antimycotics are used in the treatment of candidiasis such as topical nystatin, clotrimazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, amphotericin B, voriconazole, caspofungin, medicated douches, vaginal suppositories, corticosteroid cream, and gentian violet. Even herbs such as Tabebuia avellanedae, garlic, echinacea, tea tree oil, and pomegranate extract gel are also good at treating this candidiasis infection. Candidiasis infection can be prevented by putting on a good cotton underwear, avoiding douches and vaginal toothpastes, and maintaining a good body mass index.
